BBC SINHALA SERVICE SANDESHAYA broadcast on 25th
May and 1st June 2004. Interview by Wimalasena Hewage.
Walking Down Memory Lane. In this programme devoted
to interviews with Sri Lankans who have spent decades away from their
motherland Daisy Wimalagunaratna Abeygunasekara (Daisy Abey) tells the story
of how she left Sri Lanka in the sixties and how she came to write poetry
and prose. She describes the early difficulties writers have in getting
published and the great satisfaction she feels when she receives feedback
from her writing. She also tells of her loneliness because she lives so far
away from her beloved country Sri Lanka and how her sense of isolation and
separation from eastern culture has inspired her to write about the
contrasting life styles in rural Sri Lanka set against the hectic stress of
life in the inner cities of northern England with the darker side of its
culture.
